Obama Declares War on Syria’s Assad

Fri Jun 14, 2013 AT 12:16 PM EDT

President Obama announced the U.S. would be providing military support to Syrian rebels after revealing the administration believes Syrian dictator Bashar Assad has used chemical weapons against the rebels, reports CBS News and the Washington Post. Obama’s decision comes just one day after Politico reported that President Clinton sided with John McCain in calls for greater military support for the rebels, saying Obama risked looking “like a total fool” if he continued down the previous path. The decision, however, will likely be criticized in other quarters because of the beliefs of the Syrian rebels, who have previously pledged support to al-Qaeada – as reported by USA Today in April.
