By a vote of 68 to 32, the U.S. Senate approved sweeping legislation Thursday to overhaul the nation’s immigration system for the first time in a generation by spending tens of billions of dollars to bolster security along the U.S. southern border and offering a path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants, reports The Washington Post. Meanwhile, lobbyists for resorts, au pair agencies, and the seafood industry successfully slipped special-interest perks into the bill, such as Sen. Bernie Sanders’ $1.5 billion taxpayer set aside for youth jobs programs, Breitbart reports. After passage of the bill, Sen. Jeff Sessions dead panned: “this bill must never become law.”
