Obama Snubs Putin Over Snowden

Thu Aug 8, 2013 AT 7:14 AM EDT

President Obama has canceled a planned summit meeting with Russian president, Vladimir Putin, officials said Wednesday, a response to frustration at the Russian government for refusing to extradite Edward Snowden, the fugitive intelligence analyst, to the United States to face charges of leaking national security secrets, reports the New York Times.  But analysts tell Politico the talk of Snowden’s role in the cancellation obscured a more basic reality: the U.S.-Russia relationship is now so frosty that it didn’t appear the two presidents would actually accomplish enough to merit such a high-profile meeting. The Washington Post reports Jay Carney cited a “lack of progress” with Russia over the past 12 months on a broad range of issues, though he added that Russia’s “disappointing decision” last week to grant Snowden temporary asylum was also a factor.
