No End in Sight, Attention Turns to Debt Ceiling

Thu Oct 3, 2013 AT 6:00 AM EDT

President Obama called a White House meeting with key leaders from Congress – and nothing happened Wednesday except both sides saying they weren’t budging, reports Politico. Attention is now moving to the debt ceiling, which the federal government is scheduled to hit within the next few weeks, writes the Washington Post. The editorial page of the Wall Street Journal points out that, despite his rhetoric, President Obama has already rejected a sensible Republican plan to prevent a debt default in the event of a political stalemate. Finally, Politico reports that Senate Republicans have privately turned on Ted Cruz, and Rand Paul appears well-positioned to play the role of deal-maker.
