Boehner Abandons GOP, Passes Debt Limit Bill with Nearly All Democrats

Wed Feb 12, 2014 AT 7:48 AM EST

House Speaker ended three years of debt showdowns Tuesday by passing a no-strings attached debt ceiling hike in the U.S. House nearly all Democratic votes joined by just 28 Republicans, reports the New York Times. Boehner’s move followed weeks of internal House GOP caucus negotiations in which Boehner failed to find a proposal which would garner enough GOP support to pass without Democratic help. Boehner broke news of his plan to fellow Republicans at a closed-door meeting Monday morning, telling colleagues, “Listen – we’re going to move forward” and that the time for negotiations within the caucus had ended, according to the Washington Post in a report on how Boehner told the GOP.
