The Washington Post reports Iraq teeters on the brink of disintegration as fighters from ISIS, an al-Qaeda offshoot, seized several more cities in northern Iraq, including Saddam Hussein’s hometown of Tikrit. As Iraqi military forces abandoned their posts, Kurdish soldiers moved quickly to save the city of Kirkuk from ISIS. And in an explosive story sure to lead to questions about whether this could have been avoided, the NYT reports that the Obama administration has rejected secret requests over the past month from Iraq Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki to carry out airstrikes against ISIS staging grounds in remote areas.
