Mon Mar 17, 2014 AT 8:20 AM EDT

A day after an alleged 97 percent of Crimeans voted in favor of secession, Crimean legislators voted to begin the process of formally splitting from Ukraine, reports the New York Times. John McCain predicts in the New York Times that Putin will eventually be deposed by Russians.
