Facing the prospects of a trouncing in the fall midterm elections, Democrats are placing a risky bet by boosting hard-right Republican candidates in several election primaries across the country. The hope is to elevate less-electable “spoiler” candidates who have fringe views they believe would be easier to beat in November. Democrats are identifying more conservative voters in states including Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Arizona who are interested in hunting, fishing, yachting, baseball, country music, and the petroleum industry.
