President Donald Trump called on Congress Tuesday to reject Democrats’ Green New Deal “nonsense” and approve a $1.8 trillion package proposed by Senate Republicans to provide relief for workers and businesses from the impact of the coronavirus outbreak. “This is not about the ridiculous Green New Deal. It is about putting our great workers and companies BACK TO WORK!” Trump tweeted. A rival $2.5 trillion bill unveiled by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi includes proposals for expanded solar energy tax credits and tighter fuel efficiency requirements for any airlines that accept government aid. Multiple news organizations continue to peddle the convenient narrative that the public is turning against President Donald Trump as the stock market plummets. A major pollster says otherwise.

“Coronavirus pandemic has yet to impact views on Trump’s handling of economy as half of voters back Trump’s economic performance, matching precrisis numbers from January,” reports Eli Yokely, a political analyst for Morning Consult.

“Last week’s turmoil in the stock market and growing concerns about the long-term impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the U.S. economy have not shaken voters’ views on President Trump’s chief selling point as he faces reelection this fall.”

And the numbers: “A new Morning Consult/Politico poll, conducted March 13-16, found that half of voters approve of Trump’s handling of the economy, statistically similar to findings from polls conducted in the first two months of the year. The figure exceeds his overall approval rating by 7 percentage points and is driven by positive sentiment among nearly 9 in 10 Republicans and a plurality of independents,” Yokely said. The House passed by unanimous consent a revised coronavirus emergency bill that has the support of President Donald Trump as the pandemic continues to wreak havoc worldwide. The legislation, which originally passed on Saturday but was sent back to the floor over a technicality, passed a second time on Monday. The bill includes language that ensures employees will receive paid sick or family leave, as well as free COVID-19 testing during the outbreak. After Monday’s passage, it heads to the Senate, where it could be passed as early as Tuesday. Read Full Story
