Speaker Kevin McCarthy is playing offense by putting early pressure on Senate Democrats running for reelection in red states to back proposals being passed out of the GOP-controlled House.
Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer must decide how much political cover to give members of his caucus running for reelection in states such as West Virginia, Montana, and Ohio, with control of the chamber on the line in 2024.
Schumer has taken shots at McCarthy and House Republicans in recent days, accusing them of pushing an “extreme” agenda. But McCarthy is punching back, hitting Democrats in states that former President Donald Trump carried in 2016 and 2020. Read Full Story

The messy, drawn-out battle over electing the next speaker is raising the danger of a debt limit crisis later this year, lawmakers in both parties warn.
Conservative rebels in the House are demanding that the next speaker, whether it’s Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., or someone else, make a stand against passing a clean debt limit increase, which would set up a major fight with Senate Democrats and President Biden.
Congress has successfully avoided a debt limit crisis since 2011, which was also the first year of a new House GOP majority.
That year, the standoff between the Republican-controlled House and the Democrat-controlled Senate and White House brought the federal government within days of defaulting on its debt obligations. Read Full Story

While the nationwide red wave Republicans were hoping for failed to appear on Nov. 8, they had a stellar night in Florida. Gov. Ron DeSantis won reelection by nearly 20 points after barely eking out a victory in 2018, while Sen. Marco Rubio also coasted to victory by a 16-point margin.
But it’s a handful of wins in the House of Representatives that will shift the dynamic on Capitol Hill next year, and some of the most consequential came in the Sunshine State.
Along with the four congressional seats Republicans picked up in Florida, they easily defended several seemingly competitive districts. The party credited DeSantis’ efforts redrawing the state’s congressional maps for their wins. Read Full Story
