In his first floor speech after being elected House leader, Speaker Mike Johnson addressed colleagues Wednesday, accusing President Joe Biden of deliberately opening the southern border, causing record-high immigration numbers.

“We have a catastrophe at the southern border. It is because the border has been deliberately opened wide that we see the terrific horrors that are taking place,” Johnson said in his 30-minute speech. “I’m here this morning to beg my colleagues to help us force the administration to take action.”

House Republicans scheduled a first vote for Tuesday on articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. 

GOP lawmakers have been particularly offput by Mayorkas’ demeanor in testimony to congressional panels, where he has responded to questions by telling committee members they don’t understand the complexities of the immigration system. He has also labeled some of his Republican questioners “misleading,” “revolting,” and “adversarial.” 

“You are so profoundly disrespecting my 22 years of government service,” Mayorkas told GOP Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in one exchange.

“I believe he must be impeached. There is no single person who has done more damage to our national security than him. It’s time for him to go,” said Rep. Kat Cammack. R-Fla. Read Full Story

Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., on Monday accused Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., former chairman of the now-dissolved Jan. 6 committee, of improperly archiving committee data, saying some items were missing, deleted, or encrypted.

Loudermilk chairs a House subcommittee that’s been investigating the Democratic-led committee since Republicans took over the House majority last year. 

Loudermilk said committee members “excluded evidence that did not support their narrative, which was that Trump and the Republicans are the ones who planned and carried out and assisted in the attacks on the Capitol.” Read full Story
