Obama’s Comments on Ukraine that Would Shock Reagan

Mon Mar 24, 2014 AT 8:16 AM EDT

Think the Ukraine crisis resembles the Cold War? Think again, says President Obama. Over the weekend, Obama told a Dutch newspaper that the Ukraine crisis is not a “zero-sum” game between the United States and Russia. Nor, he said, does the United States any longer “view Europe as a battleground between East and West.” Instead, he chastised those who think otherwise, “That’s the kind of thinking that should have ended with the Cold War.” On Monday, Ukraine’s interim president ordered the withdrawal of troops from Crimea because of Russian threats to their lives. And Obama’s deputy director of national security admitted Russia could be planning a second invasion of Ukraine.
