Fri Jul 25, 2014 AT 8:31 AM EDT

Newsmax reports the Obama administration is considering a new immigration plan that would offer refugee status to children and young adults in Honduras. The process would start with the screening of children and young adults in Honduras. Those accepted could then travel to the U.S. without going through Mexico. Officials assume 5,000 Hondurans would apply and 1,750 would be accepted. If successful, officials would look to expand it to Guatemala and El Salvador.
