Zimmerman Lawyer: Prosecution ‘Disgraceful;’ Obama: Honor Trayvon With Gun Control

Mon Jul 15, 2013 AT 10:19 AM EDT

Following five weeks of trial and 56 witnesses, for most legal analysts it was little surprise that jurors rejected even the lesser “compromise” verdict of manslaughter, acquitting George Zimmerman of all criminal charges, deciding he acted in self-defense in the February 2012 shooting of Trayvon Martin, reports the Miami Herald. A Zimmerman attorney called the prosecution “disgraceful.”  CNN notes the verdict caps a case that has inflamed passions for well over a year, much of it focused on race. The six jurors — all women — deliberated for 16½ hours. Meanwhile, Breitbart reports President Obama issued a response Sunday afternoon, urging Americans to “honor” the life of Trayvon Martin by committing to “stem the tide of gun violence.”
