Prior to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s arrival in Washington, D.C., Senate Republicans are casting doubt they will reach a deal unlocking aid to Ukraine by the end of the year. 

Lawmakers have linked money for Ukraine, Israel, the U.S. border, and other priorities in the $111 billion aid package requested by President Joe Biden. The Senate is scheduled to leave town by the end of the week, and the House departs a day earlier, giving negotiators only days to strike a deal. 

Zelenskyy will address senators Tuesday morning and is also set for separate sit-downs with Biden and House Speaker Mike Johnson. Read Full Story

A bipartisan group of House lawmakers on Monday introduced a bill to reauthorize the intelligence communities’ warrantless spy powers with new restrictions on accessing data collected on Americans and greater penalties for law enforcement who violate the law. 

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., and a bipartisan group of co-sponsors, attempts to resolve the Section 702 debate of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act ahead of its end-of-the-year expiration. 

The requirement that law enforcement entities obtain a warrant to review any information on Americans swept up in other searches has been called a red line by national security leaders and is a top priority for privacy rights groups. Read Full Story

Tempers exploded at a Senate Judiciary Committee meeting Thursday before Democrats voted to subpoena a conservative donor and a conservative activist linked to the Supreme Court’s ethics scandals. 

The meeting came after weeks of partisan fighting among committee members over plans to subpoena Harlan Crow and Leonard Leo regarding reports they played roles in taking Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito on luxury vacations. 

Approval of the subpoenas is largely symbolic, because it would require 60 votes on the Senate floor to enforce them and no GOP senator is expected to vote for such an action… Read Full Story
