The House Freedom Caucus took an official position against House Speaker Mike Johnson’s plan to avert a government shutdown, which he will aim to pass with support from Democrats on Tuesday. 

“The House Freedom Caucus opposes the proposed ‘clean’ Continuing Resolution as it contains no spending reductions, no border security, and not a single meaningful win for the American People,” the group said in a statement Tuesday morning. 

An official position from the Freedom Caucus requires support from 80% of the group, which has around three dozen members. Read Full Story

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told Congress on Wednesday that he needs $14 billion in border money immediately, but any policy changes must wait until lawmakers are ready to pass a broad immigration bill that includes legalization of illegal immigrants.

Democrats and Republicans told him he was wrong. Senators made clear that they and their constituents want policies to change the trajectory of the worst border chaos in history and funding to increase hiring isn’t enough. 

“We need to see some reforms,” said Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska. “Just putting more money into a broken system doesn’t give people the confidence they need.” Read Full Story

Senate Republicans, led by Sens. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, and James Lankford of Oklahoma, on Monday unveiled a list of immigration reforms they will demand be attached to any foreign aid package funding the war in Ukraine, signaling a difficult negotiation with Democrats in the next few weeks. 

“President [Joe] Biden’s immigration policies have put American workers last and exposed our communities to crime and terrorism. This border package will cut off the flow of illegal migration, prioritize legitimate claims to entry, and restore order,” Cotton said in a statement attached to the multi-point proposal.   

Republicans want the Department of Homeland Security to resume construction of the southwestern border wall, beef up pay for Border Patrol agents, reform the nation’s asylum laws, crack down on humanitarian parole of illegal migrants, and deny asylum to migrants who cross through safe third countries before coming to the United States. Read Full Story
