House Speaker Mike Johnson faces a growing to-do list during his first full week as speaker, tackling must-pass spending legislation, as well as aid requests to Israel and Ukraine amid foreign wars. 

When lawmakers reconvene Wednesday night, the House is expected to begin votes on three of its must-pass appropriations bills, with no plan yet to advance a stopgap spending measure to avoid a government shutdown before the Nov. 17 deadline. 

Lawmakers are also set to vote on aid for Israel as it continues to engage in the war against Hamas, with Johnson insisting that the conflict “takes the immediate attention.” Read Full Story

House Republicans in the conservative Freedom Caucus are demanding party leaders cancel their upcoming two-week recess until lawmakers can elect a new speaker. 

The House is scheduled to adjourn on Friday and not return until the second week of November, leaving lawmakers with only two weeks to pass some sort of spending bill to avoid a government shutdown on Nov. 17. “Intentional and unnecessary delays must end. It serves only the lobbyists of the swamp and defenders of the status quo to continue to drag out this process,” the caucus said in a statement on Monday.

Ahead of a critical floor vote, Rep. Jim Jordan, the Republican nominee for House speaker, promised to unite the conference and not simply govern as a hardline conservative. 

“The role of a speaker is to bring all Republicans together. That’s what I intend to do,” Jordan wrote in a letter to fellow GOP lawmakers. 

Republicans are heading to the House Tuesday for the second time this Congress to try and elect a speaker, marking what they hope will be a unifying moment for a party. Read Full Story
