Republicans are attracting more registered voters in states where Democrats have long held a registration advantage — reflecting one of many ways in which the current political landscape is tilting toward the GOP.

Facing the prospects of a trouncing in the fall midterm elections, Democrats are placing a risky bet by boosting hard-right Republican candidates in several election primaries across the country. The hope is to elevate less-electable “spoiler” candidates who have fringe views they believe would be easier to beat in November. Former President Donald Trump will return to Washington, D.C., later this month for the first time since leaving the White House in early 2021.
