One year after the Unites States’ chaotic troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, House Republicans are slamming President Joe Biden’s handling of the exit and accusing the White House of attempting to rewrite history.

GOP lawmakers marked the anniversary of Kabul falling to the Taliban with a barrage of criticism on Monday, arguing the Biden administration’s decision to stick to a self-imposed end-of-August deadline for pulling out troops led to the Taliban’s swift takeover of the country, endangered allies, and weakened the U.S. standing on the world stage.

GOP lawmakers on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, led by ranking member Michael McCaul, R-Texas, released a report ahead of the anniversary accusing the administration of purposefully misleading the public and laying out a blueprint for a congressional investigation should Republicans win the House majority in November. Read Full Story

Republicans on the House Oversight and Reform Committee sent a letter on Wednesday to the head of the National Archives and Records Administration asking about its role in the FBI’s search of former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.

The lawmakers, led by Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., sent the letter to Debra Wall, acting archivist of the U.S., requesting an “immediate briefing” on the National Archives’ role in the raid and requested that she preserve all documents and communications related to the FBI’s search warrant. Republicans have slammed the FBI’s search of Trump’s property and called for an explanation from the DOJ about what led to it. 

The members are requesting a briefing no later than Aug. 17, along with a range of documents from Jan. 20, 2021, the day Trump left office, to the present. Read Full Story

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy promised on Monday that if Republicans take back the chamber after November’s midterm elections, they will investigate the Department of Justice, telling Attorney General Merrick Garland to “preserve your documents and clear your calendar.”

“I’ve seen enough. The Department of Justice has reached an intolerable state of weaponized politicization,” McCarthy said. “When Republicans take back the House, we will conduct immediate oversight of this department, follow the facts, and leave no stone unturned.” Read Full Story
