Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell likely won’t be able to steer clear of the “long arm” of former President Donald Trump, should Republicans retake control of the Senate, according to one of the journalist authors of a new book taking Washington by storm.
The thin margin by which Republicans may take command of the upper chamber would be decked with candidates beholden to Trump, making it difficult for McConnell, poised to retake the majority leader role, to wriggle free of the former president’s influence, New York Times reporter Alex Burns said during a TV appearance Wednesday. Republicans spoke out Monday night in response to the leak of a Supreme Court draft ruling that would overturn Roe v. Wade.
Politico published what it said was a draft majority decision, authored by conservative Justice Samuel Alito, that would end federal abortion rights, returning to the state level the legality of the procedure.
While Democrats denounced the substance of the draft ruling, GOP leaders condemned the leak itself, with some saying it was evidence of hostility toward conservative views… Read Full Story

Republicans have introduced legislation that seeks to put a stop to the Biden administration’s current pandemic freeze on federal student loan payments while also limiting the president’s authority to suspend repayments going forward.
“Taxpayers and working families should not be responsible for continuing to bear the costs associated with this suspension of repayment. This common-sense legislation would protect taxpayers and prevent President Biden from suspending federal student loan repayments in perpetuity,” said Senate Minority Whip John Thune in a statement, one of the bill’s authors, and added any future suspension of loan repayments “should be left to Congress.” Read Full Story
